Daniel James Scores On Debut for Manchester United Against Chelsea

Man United players celebrate goal with Daniel James

Manchester United midfielder Daniel James dream came through when he scored his first goal on debut against Chelsea.

Manchester United opened their first match of the 2019/2020 EPL against Chelsea at Old Trafford.  There was a great uproar by the United fans when they saw the new signee Daniel James scored the fourth (4th) goal of the match.  The $19 million midfielder from Swansea City scored a brilliant goal with a right-footed shot inside the 18-yard box in front of the spectators at the Stretford end. It was a deflected shot that had sneaked its way pass Kepa Arrizabalaga to put Manchester United up by four goals in their season opener against Chelsea.

Daniel James’ goal came in the 81st minute thanks to a brilliant run by the midfielder Paul Pogba from just behind the half-line to about 25 yards away from goal.  Paul Pogba made a right footed (in my opinion) through-pass to James (the ball went between two Chelsea players before reaching James’ feet).  James quickly controlled the ball with a first touch and drifted to his right or the left of the goal before sneaking his deflected shot into the back of the net. The goal almost didn’t score (due to the deflection and efforts by Kepa)  but it was a goal anyhow much to James’ delight and his fellow Manchester United players, and supporters.

How Was The Build-Up That Led To The Goal?

Scott McTominay (#39) to Paul Pogba (#6) to Anthony Martial (#9) to Paul Pogba (#6again) to Daniel James (#21).

The goal came after Manchester United was able to break up a Chelsea attack through Scott McTominay who took down a cross on his chest before making an quick pass to Paul Pogba (on the left-flank of the field), who quickly ran with it before passing it to Anthony Martial who quickly returned the pass to Pogba just infront of the half-line.  Pogba then used his ability and power to run and dribble with the ball amongst three Chelsea players before releasing the ball to Daniel James who gratefully controlled that ball before taking his shot on goal.

That was a brilliant counter-attack!

Daniel quickly ran to the right corner flank flag in front of the Stretford end to celebrate his goal and was quickly joined in by another new signee Wan-Bissacka from Crystal Palace, and they were then joined by Jesse Lingard, followed by Lindelof then Harry Mcguire (another new signee from Leceister City), then Rasford, followed by the remaining Manchester United players on the field except for De Gea who was also celebrating from his end of the field.

When Did Daniel James Sign for Man United?

On June 06, 2019 Daniel James signed for Manchester United from Swansea City for a cost of $19 million, which may increase to $22.8million due to add-ons.  According to a report by NBCsports, Solskjaer was cited as saying that Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic. Solskjaer also said that the great season that the young midfielder had with Swansea City and the great attributes that he displayed which are of Manchester United quality was also a reason that he signed him to the club.  Speaking on behalf of the club, Solskjaer said that they are delighted that James signed for the club and that they are looking forward to working with him.  Ole also said that Man United is the perfect environment for Daniel to continue his development.

The youngster, who is also a Wales player said that he is delighted to play for Manchester United, and he paid tribute to his father who had passed away a few weeks before he signed the deal to join the Red Devils from Swansea City.  Daniel said that the day he signed for United was one of the best days of his life and that he is looking forward to the challenge of playing for the club. He also said that it was an incredibly proud moment for him and his family but there is some sadness because his dad was not there to share the happy moment with him.

The 21 year-old is the first signing for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since he took over as permanent manager of the Red -Devils, became one of the youngest midfielders to play for United.  He was given the number 21 jersey.  The number 21 jersey was previously worn by the Spaniard Ander Herrera who had previously signed for Paris-Saint German (PSG).

The Manchester United players are off to a brilliant start this season and Daniel James is no exception, especially when he scored his first goal for United in the first match of the 2019/202 season.  He is a very promising player, and I believe that with him wearing the number 21 jersey, he may just be the player to replace Ander Herrera.  At age 21, he is very young and all Man United supporters will be looking to see him develop his career to a higher leverl while at United.
