How will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United face PSG?

With only one defeat to his team so far since taking over as interim manager for Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be thinking a lot on how he can get his players to overcome the 2-0 deficit against PSG at Old Trafford.

The first leg match wasn’t what Ole and his players were hoping for. The team seemed to have a slight advantage when the news was announced that PSG’s main star player Neymar Jr. would not be playing in the first leg and neither Cavani. But, the absence of the two players seemed to be nothing as PSG got a comfortable 2-0 win as United suffered a few injuries in that encounter.

A match without Paul Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sending out his team of Manchester United players to overhaul the 2 goal deficit and lead them into the quarter-final stage of the Champions League without Paul Pogba. Solskjaer had stated before he became United’s caretaker that if were the manager for Manchester United, he would build his team around Paul Pogba, which he has been doing. Paul Pogba is a World Class midfielder and he has been very prolific in the Man United matches ever since the arrival of Solskjaer.

Everyone of United’s fans was hoping that Pogba would have played very well and helped United to get at least a goal in that first leg. But, thanks to ‘an’ unfair referee as many persons may say. Pogba was sent off for receiving a second yellow card of the match. Hence, he will not be playing in this second leg. I know Solskjaer and his teammates will definitely miss him. Nevertheless, he can still be an inspiration to his teammates and offer some very good advice in the pre-match preparation.

Solskjaer’s starting eleven will be so much different from what he had originally planned because before the first match he had Pogba to be included in the first team for every match of the two legs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has more injury worries

It is unfortunate to say that Manchester United will be going into that second leg without most of its key players due to injury and also a red card. According to Man United news on Sky Sports, Anthony Martial is out of the line up for the match against PSG.  So, that’s two French men, a striker and midfielder who will be out of this line-up. Solskjaer is, however, remaining optimistic that we should not give up and is hinting that it’s still possible for Man United to win this match.

But, apart from Martial and Pogba, there are other players that are injured that Solskjaer would have otherwise called upon, and such players are:

Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian will be out. Solskjaer has called upon academy players such as Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner to travel with the squad.

Manchester United will make history if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players get a 3 goal margin victory or win the match 3-1. As United will be the first team to progress to the quarterfinal in the Champions League after losing the home match by two goals or more. Whatever strategy Solskjaer has, it can work and all Manchester United supporters are hoping that the players will pull through although it’s an uphill task, especially with so many injuries.

Which team do you think will win?

It’s difficult to give Man United the victory before the match begins based on stats and the players that are available that will be the result of the match?

Kylian Mbappe should be playing and so too is Neymar Jr. As well as Kimpembe who scored the first goal for PSG in the first leg. Also, to be included for PSG is a former United player, Angel Dimaria. Based on the match on Saturday vs Southampton, United still has some defensive issues and it is highly likely that PSG will take advantage of that and try to score as many goals as possible.

Before the first leg, United beat Fulham 3-0, but this is the second leg away to PSG and so many football analysts will be giving PSG the win over United due to the number of injuries as well. United had far fewer injuries before the first leg encounter but now without Martial, Pogba and Herrera, defeat is likely for United. But as a Man United supporter, I would rather remain optimistic/hopeful and believe that somehow the Red Devils will leave that match with that victory and march into the quarterfinal.

What is your prediction of the match? Do you think Manchester United can create an upset and qualify for the quarterfinal? Or do you think with PSG being the better of the two teams so far, they will hand United another 2 nil defeat? Let me know what you think.

Marcus Rashford is fit to play!

Marcus Rashford, who now holds the #10 jersey for United, is deemed fit to play and that is a very good sign. He can partner with Romelu Lukaku, who is now in a good form, to create chances and ensure to capitalise so that United gets as many goals as possible. Lukaku seems to be in a red hot form because he scored four goals for United in 2 matches. Let’s hope that his form continues and even upgrade/improve in the match vs PSG, especially.

Rashford took a little knock himself. He had to play the entire match, Liverpool while suffering an injury picked up during that match. He played against Crystal Palace and Southampton. Other players such as Luke Shaw has been impressive lately and is expected to join the Man United team in France to play PSG.

Solskjaer is preparing to win

Based on his recent conferences, Solskjaer seems that he is willing to make the players put out all the efforts possible to get that desired victory. He is not giving up. He believes in his players very much, especially when he expressed that he is pleased with Luke Shaw’s previous performances. He also stated that when players are confident, they play well and then their confidence grows when they play very well.

Without Pogba, Martial, Sanchez and others such as Herrera it will be very difficult. But this can be a chance for Rashford and Lukaku to shine very bright and lead the other players on the attack while inspiring their fellow teammates, especially the academy players such as Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong. Lukaku should be on his form still and shows signs of improvement.

Thank you for reading. Let me know what you think about this match, and if you have any comments to make about any of the players please do so in the comments section below. Thank you.

  1. There is no doubt this is the end of the road for Machester united in the champions league, I watched Ole Gunnar’s interview yesterday when he said victory is possible but they can’t try that shit with PSG team. This is a team that is presently on fire and seriously in form to play against any team, On the other hand, they are very good with home games.

Something good might still come out but the probability of success for man united is less than half, let me give it 0.4

    1. Thanks for your honest opinion. I’m sorry I did not get to respond to you before the start of the match.  But after 90 minutes and about 10 minutes of stoppage time, Man United did well enough to hold on to their 3-1 lead and come out victorious over PSG, just as I had mentioned in the article. Now United is marching on to the quarterfinal.

  2. I don’t know much about the topic, but soccer is something I grew up with.  I particularly love FCB and I enjoy seeing them play.  Also, I was lucky enough to see Argentina playing against Panama in the Centennial Cup in Chicago in 2016.  That was a blast, especially when I was able to share that experience with my kids.

I think soccer is a great game, and I’m happy to see that it’s growing on people lately.

    1. Soccer is indeed a great game.  To understand you will have to watch more matches and talk with soccer experts and read about it.  I think you will enjoy watching some English Premier League matches, especially the ones with Manchester United.

  3. I enjoyed reading your article on man united. Football is like a biscuit, you never quite know where it will crack. Just like his Ajax dismantled Madrid last night, United still have hope going into this fixture. However, I’m sceptical of United’s defence, especially with Neymar being available for this one. It would be a very difficult tie, but never write off United, I believe they can do another comeback on PSG, just as Barcelona did last season.

    1. I am glad you enjoyed reading my article on Man United. I appreciate it.  I agree with you about football and it is the greatest sport on earth.  United may not have the strongest defence now but this team under Solskjaer has a lot of determination and I know Solskjaer will be looking for nothing less than a win. The players have it in them to win so let them win.

  4. Thanks, Nickoy. It would indeed be an interesting match. Man United do believe everything is possible. It is unfortunate that several first-team players would not be playing mainly because of injury. I believe and expect those selected by Ole Gunnar to rise to the occasion. They have to prove themselves again and again. This is not the first time a team is overhauling a 2 goal deficits, some year back, FC Barcelona overhauled a four goal deficit on Camp nou with the same PSG, though Neymar Jr was the star man for Barcelona that night. I expect a very unpredictable match.

    1. Yes, I do believe the two-goal deficit can be overhauled.  Man United will be without most of their key players, but Lukaku and Rashford were still present, alongside De Gea.  Now after watching the second leg of the match, it is indeed a wonderful feeling for United supporters to see the final scoreline with Man United getting the victory they needed.

  5. Thanks for writing this article on Manchester United. I have been a fan of the team since when I was little. I have seen the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson coach the team to various victory in the past till he retired and also see other coaches take over from him till coach Mourinho.but when talking about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer I know he is capable to find a way around even when his team has a problem with defence side. Is possible PSG win the match be there is room for more improvement I personally don’t believe at first he will be a good coach for the team.

    1. I believe in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.  He was a legendary player for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.  Solskjaer came at a time when the team needed a saviour or some great rejuvenation and so far, the only match United has lost is the one against PSG in the first leg of the Champions League match.  Solskjaer is a good coach for the team and I think he will become an even better one in the near future.  All he needs is a chance.  As for the second leg match, watch it and see for yourself what I am talking about.

  6. It’s really difficult for Solskjaer. Having built the team around Paul Pogba and now these 2 consecutive yellow cards. In my book, sending him off the pitch was unfair. But it has already been done.

Besides Pogba now Martial, Sanchez and Herrera will also be away from the action. I remember Solskjaers as a player and also remember some of his brilliant moves. He might surprise us once again in this very dark scenario.

What do you think has been the key weapon PSG has been using against Man United?

    1. I think PSG came into the first leg of the match with the intent to attack United a lot as well as doing much defending, which they did very well.  But, at the end of the first half and early in the second half, things went PSG’s way with the substitution of Lingard and Martial due to injuries, and then the sending off of Pogba.  Kimpembe scored and then Mbappe and there was no real chance for United to answer.  But, look at the second leg match and see what has been done!

  7. I understand your optimism for United but without their key players and a quasi-incomplete first team, I don’t see Manchester winning this one. It would be really shocking if they did. I am seeing a team that would go to France to play a defensive game. It would be difficult for the reserve team to produce the result that we are expecting, I don’t think they have enough time to train in a way that they can defeat PSG. And even from the time of Mourinho, Manchester has been known to lose to PSG, I don’t see how they can go to PSG home to win 3-1 or 3-0. That’s really difficult.

    1. I am really optimistic about Manchester United.  After seeing the results of yesterday’s match.  I can almost say that I am a psychic. Lol. I did not directly predict the final scoreline.  But somehow, the United players must have been reading my post and say to themselves, you know what, we can do it! And they did it- they beat PSG 3-1! It’s almost unbelievable, but I believe it now.
