Manchester United FC results: Manchester United 2 Arsenal 1

Manchester United and Arsenal are arch rivals and they have a long history of ongoing rivalry over the years in the premier league.

The Red Devils have played against all their main rivals this season in the premier league and, Arsenal was the last one.  When the match ended, the Manchester United FC results were: Man United 2, Arsenal 1.

It was an exciting match that had to wait until the 90th minute for the winner. The winning goal came from a brilliant header made by substitute Maroaune Fellaini in minute 91. Fellaini came on in the 64th minute for Ander Herrera, and did not disappoint as he took the opportunity to score a brilliant header from a rather difficult angle.

The Belgian proved to the Arsenal defence that he can be much trouble to them and proved that Mourinho made the right decision to put him on.

Marouane Fellaini- a United midfielder
Paul Pogba had given Manchester United the lead in the 16th minute after he volleyed a ball in the sixth yard box. His goal came after he had worked himself into the six yard box with the ball and passed to Sanchez whose header was blocked onto the post, but Pogba ensured that the ball went in.

The score would continue like this until the second half when new Arsenal signee, formerly a United player, Mkhitaryan made a brilliant low shot to equalise. The equaliser seemed as if it would be enough for the Gunners to snatch a point from the match. But, when Ashley Young made a cross to Fellaini inside the 18-yard box, the hope of getting a point was dashed as the Belgian scored.

Pogba, Fellaini and Mourinho spoke about Manchester United FC results

In a post-match interview Pogba said that he felt very good about scoring for Manchester United again, especially early in the game. He said he thinks all his team-mates played well, but expressed that he wished that they were still in the Champions league. However, his focus is to win the FA Cup and finish second in the premier league.

Paul Pogba- A Manchester United Midfielder
Fellaini said that he followed Mourinho’s instructions. He said the manager told him to get into the box and, he did just that. Fellaini said that he knows that his height can be an advantage for him as he knows he is very dangerous in the box. He commented that the ball from Ashley Young was a very good one, and so he just did a flick-on and scored.
Mourinho’s decision to bring on Fellaini was a good one and Fellaini did follow his instructions. This shows that Mourinho had it well planned out and was prepared to defeat Arsene Wenger.

Mourinho said if the game ended in a draw it would not have been an unfair result because the Arsenal players played very well and the Manchster United players played very well as also. He said the addition of Maroaune Fellaini was to give United more presence in the box- and that’s what happened. His continual presence resulted in a goal for United.

Mkhitaryan scored for Arsenal to make it 1:1

Alexis Sanchez’s header, which was blocked by Hector Bellerin, in the first half was probably his best chance of scoring against his old club. Sanchez saw his effort blocked by Bellerin and then it hit the post. But, Pogba comforted Sanchez as he ensured the rebound resulted in a goal. On the other hand, Henrihk Mkhitaryan tried to score against his old club, and got results for his effort as he netted in the 51st minute.

Mkhitaryan- a former United Midfielder, and now an Arsenal midfielder

Both players were involved in swap deal in the January window as Arsenal swapped Sanchez for Mkhitaryan and Manchester United swapped Mkhitaryan for Sanchez. The Chilean went to United from Arsenal, while the Armenian went to Arsenal from Manchester United.

Alexis Sanchez-when he was an Arsenal Player

Mkhitaryan’s goal came as a result of some of United’s players giving up the ball too loosely. Mkhitaryan got his goal with the help of Granit Xhkaka as he made a low right footed shot past De Gea. The last time the Armenian scored at Old Trafford was for the Red Devils against Everton in September 2017. However, he hardly celebrated the goal as he knew it was against his former club.

Stream of Substitutions in the 64th minute

In the 64th minute a stream of substitutions were made by both Mourinho and Wenger. Mourinho took off Ander Herrera for Marouane Fellaini and, Jesse Lingard for Anthony Martial. While Wenger brought on ex-United striker Danny Welbeck and Nacho Monreal for Reiss Nelson and the injured Sead Kolisinac, respectively. Earlier, Lukaku was taken off for Rashford to come on after Lukaku suffered an injury, in the 50th minute.

Danny Welbeck- ex United Striker

Martial and Lukaku here- congratulate each other. De Gea in the green
The substitutes Martial and Welbeck were on fire for their clubs as Welbeck made a full-blooded long range, which was saved by David De Gea. Anthony Martial was instrumental as he gave Chris Smalling a good opportunity to continue his goal scoring form for United with a very good pass. But, Smalling was unable to capitalise on the opportunity as his effort to connect with the ball was not good enough- he made a side-footed shot at goal.

In the 76th minute Mkhitaryan was substituted for Joe Willock to come on and when he was leaving the pitch he received a warm round of applause from the United fans.

Marcus Rashford- A United Forward
The Manchester United fans thought the game was put to bed when Marcus Rashford scored after he received a rebound off the post from a Fellaini header after a great cross from Martial. But, the goal was not counted because the

striker was ruled offside.

However, this disappointment was short-lived because Fellaini scored in the 91st minute with a flick-on header from an Ashley Young pass. This goal confirms United’s place in the top four and also ensured automatic qualification for the Champions league in the 2018-2019 season; Yes!

The reason for this is that United is in second place on 77 points, 6 ahead of Liverpool and 9 points ahead of fourth place Tottenham.

Liverpool has two games remaining and can only get a maximum of 78 points- if they win their last two games. Tottenham has four matches remaining, which includes their fixture against Watford tomorrow (April 30,2018) and, they can only get a maximum of 80 points, if they win their last four games. On the other hand, Manchester United needs only four points from 3 matches to get 81 points to secure second position and, this is achievable.

I believe that United will gain 9 points from the these last three matches and finish on 86 points.

Manchester United set eyes on the FA Cup final

Jose Mourinho only made one change to the team that defeated Tottenham in the FA Cup semifinal- he started Victor Lindelof for Phil Jones. This suggests that the team that started today might be the team he uses in the final. However, with Lukaku substituted injured, there is no guarantee that he will recover for preparation for that match.

This match against Arsenal was not the only one that they won 2-1.  Manchester United FC result against Tottenham was 2-1 at Wembley.

I think Martial should be included in the starting line-up for United in the FA cup final or even in the last three matches because he is such wonderful talented player. He was also instrumental today in helping United secure all three points against Arsenal, although he came on in the 64th minute.

I think Pogba will continue in this form that he is in and improve in the FA Cup final because he talks about winning the title a lot and, seems like he is mentally ready for it.  Now with Manchester United set to play against Chelsea in the FA Cup final, I won’t be surprised if Manchester United gets another 2-1 victory against Chelsea to wrap up Manchester United FC results for the season against their rivals. What do you think?

When is United’s next match?

Jose Mourinho will be taking his side to play away to Brighton this Friday night, May 04, 2018 for their 36th premier league match. The match is set to start at 8:00 pm British summer or 7:00 pm Greenwich meridian time or 2:00 pm Jamaica time.
