Manchester United has very talented forwards on its team. One of those forwards is Marcus Rashford- a twenty year-old who came out of the Manchester United Football academy.
Who is Marcus Rashford?
Marcus Rashford is currently a forward on the Manchester United first team. This 20 year-old black player is very talented and has proved to be very effective at times for the team. He was born on October 31, 1997.
He is not only an effective player for Manchester United but also the England national football team. Marcus joined the English football team and Manchester United team in 2016. Rashford plays forward for both his club and his national team.
He has been playing for Manchester United from age of seven. I see him as a very clinical striker and has scored in almost all his debut matches. He scored two goals in his first-team debut (UEFA-Europa League)- he was included in the team after Anthony Martial got injured during a warm-up and in his first premier league match in February 2016 (against Arsenal). Rashford also scored in his first Manchester Derby (a Manchester United versus Manchester City) match, his first league cup match and his first UEFA Champions League match.
In May 2016, Marcus Rashford scored his first goal for England, making him the youngest English player to score in his first Senior International match. He was chosen to play in the UEFA Euro 2016 competition.
The start of his Man United career
Born in Wythenshawe, Manchester, to Robert and Melanie Rashford, Marcus started playing football at the age of five for Fletcher Moss Rangers. He then moved to the Manchester Academy at the age of seven (7).
On November 21, 2015, Rashford was named on the first team bench against Watford. On February 25, 2016, Rashford was included late into the team’s starting line up when Anthony Martial got injured during a warm-up, against Midtjylland. In that match, the young player scored two goals in his team’s 5-1 victory.
These two goals made Rashford the youngest goal scorer for Man United in a European competition. The record was previously held by George Best.
Three days later, Rashford scored twice in his premier league debut against Arsenal to give Man United a 3-2 home victory. This made him the third youngest scorer for Man United in a premier league match behind Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck.
Rashford didn’t stop there in terms of scoring on debut. In his debut Manchester derby match on March 20, 2016, he scored his teams only goal to give Man United a 1-0 victory over Man City. The victory was the first away victory against Man City for United since 2012. At the time, Rashford was 18 years old, which made him the youngest player to score in a Manchester derby.
On April 13, 2016, during the FA cup sixth round second leg against West Ham, Rashford scored to give Manchester United a 2-1 victory- sending the team into the semi-finals. He also was the main forward in the team’s line-up against Crystal Palace in the FA cup final- which was won by Manchester United. The victory of the FA cup was the first silverware that Rashford had won.
At the end of the season, Marcus Rashford had made 18 appearances and scored 8 goals for United.
Young Player Award
Marcus Rashford was awarded the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award for 2016. In May 2016, he signed a new contract, which would see him staying at the club until 2020, with the option of renewing or extending for a further year.
His progress in the 2016/2017, season
When Jose Mourinho- nicknamed the Special One was appointed as Manchester United manager, he gave Rashford the number 19 jersey when he was included into the senior team. The young forward scored his first goal of the season against Hull City on August 27, 2016. The goal came in the second minute of injury time.
In September, he scored three times for United- a consolation goal for United in a 3-1 defeat to Watford, once in a 3-1 victory over Northampton Town in the EFL cup third round, and in a 4-2 League win over Leicester City.
He was Nominated for the Golden Boy award for the best European player under the age of 21, and in October 2016, he was runner-up to Portugal’s Renato Sanchez. However, Rashford failed to score until on January 7, 201, when he scored in an FA cup match against Reading- to make United’d victory 4-0.
February 26, 2017, Marcus Rashford won his third trophy at United when the team defeated Southampton 3-2 to win the EFL title. Rashford came on as a substitute during the match.
On April 16, 2017, he contributed to Man United’s 2-0 victory against Chelsea- scoring a goal after 7 minutes. Four days later, he scored a crucial goal for United against Aderlecht in a 2nd leg Europa league quarterfinal match. United won the match 2-1 and 3-2 on aggregate-sending United into the semi-final of the Europa league.
Rashford made the most appearances for United during this season with a total of 53 appearances. However, the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint German (PSG) caused him to spend the majority of the season playing on the wing instead of centre forward or striker.
Progress in the 2017,/2018 season
Marcus Rashford started his 2017,/2018 season against Spanish club giants Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup as a substitute. Manchester United lost the match 2-1. Five days later, on August 13, he started in a 4-0 home victory over West Ham United. He did not score but he was accredited with a goal assist to give Romelu Lukaku his first goal of the match.
On August 26, 2017, three minutes after coming on as a substitute, Rashford scored his first goal of the season with the opening goal against Leicester City, in a 2-0 victory. On the 12th of September, Rashford in his debut UEFA Champions league match, against Basel in a 3-0 victory-which is the third 3-0 victory. This goal makes it the sixth (6th) competition that Rashford has scored on his debut.
In the EFL third round, he scored a brace against Burton Albion, as well as assisted in the scoring of the fourth goal in a 4-1 victory. On the 23rd of October, Rashford came third in the 2017, Golden Boy award behind Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
By October 28, 2017, Rashford contributed 12 goals in 16 games with seven goals and five assists. One of those goals came against Huddersfield on October 21, and one of those assists came against Swansea City on the 24th of October.
The most memorable goals scored by Rashford so far, in my opinion are the two goals that he scored against Liverpool on March 10, 2018 at Old Trafford stadium. The two goals were enough to give Manchester United a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool. This victory has helped United to be more comfortable as the team battles to secure the 2nd place at the end of the EPL this season.
Rashford’s International Career
Rashford has been included in the England’s senior men’s National football team for world cup 2018. His head coach said in an interview that he is one of the star players on the team.
It was due to his very good performances for United in 2016 that led to him being called to represent the national team at the UEFA Euro 2016. This inclusion in the team made him the record holder for the youngest player to have represented England at the European’s Championship. The record was held before by Wayne Rooney in UEFA Euro 2004.
Marcus Rashford is a very talented player and has done very well for his club and country. He has made 71 appearances for the club (Manchester United), scoring 16 times. He has also made 10 FA cup appearances and scored 5 goals; he has made 9 appearances in the EFL cup and scored 3 goals.
In Europe, he made 22 appearances and scored 7 goals. In other matches he made 2 appearances but no goal. So far, in total, he has played for Man United 114 times and scored 31 goals. However, I can tell you that he will not stop there but continue to play for the club and improve on his football skills and score more goals.
He has made 17 appearances for the England National football team and has scored twice.
Rashford is very young and many years to have a wonderful football career for both club and country. Let us see how well he will do for the rest of the season and the seasons to come.
