What are Man United latest results in the EPL and FA Cup?

After the latest FA Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) on March 16 here are the Man United latest results: FA Cup quarterfinal fixture Manchester United 1, Wolves 2. The result of this match means Man United have been knocked out of the 2018/2019, FA Cup.

English Premier league match 30: Arsenal 2, Man United nil.

The Manchester United players seemed to have gone back to earth for a little bit after suffering their first English Premier League defeat since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager and then 6 days later suffered another defeat in the FA Cup. What do these results mean? What do you think they mean?

The first defeat came at the hands of Arsenal aka the Gunners at their home stadium. On Sunday, March 10, Arsenal fans were left celebrating as they registered a victory over rivals Manchester United and regain the fourth position (temporarily). Then 6 days later, the Manchester United players suffer another defeat, this time at the hands of a club of less calibre, the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The first of the two back-to-back defeats at the hands of Arsenal was a bit of a shocker as the Red Devils were coming off a high after a ‘miraculous’ 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at their home to advance to the quarterfinal of the Champions League. The team used to play against PSG wasn’t the strongest since the majority of the players were considered to be the B team of Manchester United, since ten of the players, which includes star players such as, Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic were ‘Missing in Action’ due to injuries, except for Pogba due to a red card suspension.

Man United vs Arsenal: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffers first EPL defeat

Manchester United supporters like myself were expecting to see a straight tenth (10th) away EPL win when the Man United players played away to Arsenal, especially when players such as Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial. Personally, I did not watch this match because I was at Church. I even remember telling one of the fellow choir members that I am confident that Manchester United will win that match, based on the Manchester United vs PSG results in which United won 3-1. I had the opportunity of glancing on my phone once to see an update of the score and it read 1-0 to Arsenal. At first, I was a bit shocked at the result but then I was saying to myself that this is United vs Arsenal so the Red Devils will overturn this score and eventually win, even though there was a slight thought in the back of my mind that Arsenal could take advantage of that lead and eventually win, and that was exactly what happened- Arsenal got a second goal through a penalty (which was not a penalty)

After returning home from Church, and I changed my clothes, I checked the score and there it was- Arsenal defeated Man United 2-0! I was shocked! This shocking result spoiled my Sunday afternoon as I had to break the news to my cousin who also was at church and was disgusted at the news of Manchester United losing to Arsenal. I never thought Man United would have lost to Arsenal because we had previously beaten them in the FA Cup 3-1. So, I was expecting United to come with another victory, but the scoreline did not have to be similar.

I know that every football manager will face defeat sometime or another but, to me, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s came ‘too early’, especially at the hands of an EPL rival that did not seem to be in their usual top form. However, I want to draw some positives from this match in terms of the fact that Solskjaer can now go to the drawing board and see the mistakes that he had made and correct them.

Man United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Wolves match in the FA Cup quarterfinal should have been a winner for the Red Devils. I know the Wolves can play football very good at times but, after seeing United defeat Arsenal and Chelsea in the FA Cup 3-1 and 2-0, respectively, I did not expect Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to suffer a defeat to Wolves, to make it two defeats in a row.

After seeing the results of the Tottenham vs Southampton match, which Southampton won 2-1, I was ‘happy’ because this meant that United can now go level on points with Tottenham, which are now on 61 points, and United was on 58 points. I was looking forward to seeing Man United gain the three points on Sunday, March 10, 2019, after playing Arsenal and create a 4 point lead above Arsenal. But, it seemed like just a dream, after the Red Devils turned out a not so good performance against an Arsenal team that was so hungry for points and desperate to win.

That result was so disappointing because I know that if United had won then they would have increased their chances of finishing in the top four. Also, I was thinking that finishing in the top three would have been possible. However, the main reason I felt so disappointed was that United will now drop out of the top four (temporarily) and be in the 5th position, which could have been avoided. Now, United are two points behind Arsenal, and first of all, they will have to play well enough to win the remaining matches and put much pressure on Arsenal and hope that Arsenal does not win all their matches. Also, the chance(s) of finishing third in the EPL is almost gone, and somehow, we may have given that to Tottenham/Arsenal because they have more points than us.

The players’ performance wasn’t as good as expected, even though Fred did play really well in the second half and it the post twice. Fred was also taken advantage of when a foul was called against him in the penalty area, which resulted in a penalty, which resulted in a second goal for Arsenal. After the replay, it was clear that the penalty decision by the referee was incorrect, but that was too late- there was no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to assist the decision.

That second goal was probably the reason for United not scoring as it put more pressure on the players and probably discouraged them to score and then equalise.

However, the first goal was a shocker- David De Gea made a mistake and the shot by Xhaka was lucky enough to end up in the back of the net. If De Gea had not slipped, then I think he more than likely would have made that save.

After the match against Arsenal, I was looking towards seeing United make up for their loss and appease the fans by beating Wolves. But it seemed as if the United players were lost in the woods and were then ambushed by a pack of Wolves. There was no real sign of zeal from the players. Rashford did not play well, neither did Pogba nor Martial. Fred did not play and I am wondering why because he played well against Arsenal. I think the error here that caused the loss for United was due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer getting it wrong. He got it wrong in the Arsenal match to some extent because he used some of the players who were just coming off injuries, then he got it even more wrong in the Wolves match when he chose not to play Fred, and he still had players who had just recovered from injuries.

However, to be honest, I think Solskjaer was having confidence in the players that they could still beat the Wolves players due to their abilities, despite just recovering from injuries. Also, I believe Solskjaer was thinking that the players who were injured lacked match sharpness so he decided to let them play to get match sharp and more ready for the upcoming EPL fixtures. Also, Luke Shaw was probably the only player alongside Nemanja Matic who was playing well.  The others seemed uninterested. However, unlike the Arsenal match, the Red Devils did score to make the final score 2-1.  That goal by Marcus Rashford came a little too late.

The loss to Wolves means that 2019, FA Cup tournament has come to an end for United. The only top EPL team left in the competition is Manchester City and they seem likely to win. This loss is a big disappointment because Man United had previously defeated Chelsea, the 2018 FA Cup Champions 2-0, and Wolves is a team of much less calibre than Man United, but yet still they managed to advance to the next round.

Man City now has an easy task to win the FA Cup

Manchester United neighbour rivals on the other side of Manchester, are still in the FA Cup competition after defeating another EPL side, Crystal Palace 3-2. There are no major or big teams remaining in the competition that could really challenge Manchester City and so this makes it easier for Man City to win the title. However, the ball is round and anything can happen- City can lose to the side of lesser calibre as I have seen in the past. But, with United out of the picture, Manchester City players are breathing a sigh of relief that they can no longer worry about facing United in the FA Cup this season.

I know it’s hard to say that Man United have lost their last two matches since March 16, 2019, but it is a part of soccer. However, both matches should have been won had the right decisions being made. Manchester United have suffered three losses since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in December 2018- one to PSG 1st leg Champions League, 1 away EPL match to Arsenal and 1 FA Cup defeat to Wolves. These losses may have hurt Man United but I believe those results will make Man United stronger as the players and Solskjaer go back to the drawing board and make corrections and improvements. It’s now time for the whole team to look forward and focus obtaining victories in their remaining matches and secure Champions League qualification in 2019/2020 season.
